The Subtle Space Between Fear and Intuition

How to tell the difference between the protective whisper of fear and the quiet nature of intuition.

Intuition doesn’t demand or rush; it simply asks for gentleness and presence.

Intuition is gentle. It doesn't demand or rush us, and it doesn't operate in emergency mode. It gives us guidance that we might use if we feel brave and ready.

Is there a space between fear and intuition?

When we find and hold that space, we can begin to differentiate the different energies of fear and intuition (love). Creating this space in our lives to understand the subtle whisper that speaks to us through our bodies rather than our minds, through something deeper than logic, requires us to find regulation, or moments of pause. It’s the brief moment where your body stops reacting on autopilot and allows you to just notice what’s happening inside. To be still, to dream, to connect. None of this can be forced, and none of it needs to happen overnight. It all just requires a softness as well as a readiness to trust our own heart, which is not always easy.

So many of us struggle to find self-compassion in moments of doubt, fear, or angst, but we all share this because we are all human. We have past experiences, traumas, and long-held protective patterns protecting us, sometimes so much so that it brings up layers of grief when we let the unwanted patterns go that we need to process emotion before we can hear what's guiding us.

There are different stages of readiness to change in healing and growth, and it’s an ongoing spiral—a non-linear journey of returning to ourselves, something we’ll hopefully all be doing forever. It is a healthy and a good thing to feel our emotions, even when they are difficult to hold. It is when we suppress or ignore them that we should be concerned, research shows how hiding our feelings creates internal strain.

We are designed to be in contact with our emotional world, and with movement and growth, regularly. Some of us are more emotional and sensitive than others, and there is many reasons for this: nature versus nurture, our unique way of being. Sensitivity is beautiful and when we can see it as a strength it can guide so much.

So, if it is challenging to differentiate feelings when they conflict and feel too strong, you’re not alone. Perhaps the first thing we can do is recognise this: that feeling things deeply might make you different, but it makes you connected to so much, subtly. And whilst that can be exhausting and debilitating at times, its a gift to the world, it’s what the world needs…

When we can’t hear our own intuition or are too afraid of it, perhaps the first step is to not be afraid of what we are experiencing in our current reality, and rather, practice radical acceptance and self-compassion.

We all confuse intuition with fear and other emotions from time to time, which is a deeply human experience and a good thing, because we are understanding our inner world. We hear people say that fear and excitement feel the same in the body, or reading about it only confuses us more. We wonder: How do we know if it’s fear or intuition?

And yet, there is a key difference between intuition and fear, and things that we can all do to gain clarity around what that difference is.

The Peacefulness Underneath the Panic

Fear is urgent. It makes us feel like everything needs to happen all at once or that the decision we make must be "right." It convinces us that if we don't act immediately, we are unsafe or failing.

Intuition is spacious. When our nervous system is regulated, we can see that there is no rigid right or wrong, there is simply choice. That feels invitational. Optional. Not rushed. Maybe this saying, "If your dreams aren’t so big that they don’t scare you, maybe you’re not connected enough to them," has truth in it. But beneath this terror is something subtle... If we notice it, it doesn’t feel personal.

It’s going to be different for all of us. But it does require trust. Intuition still requires us to be with discomfort, yet there is a peace about it, one that I believe doesn’t get spoken about enough: the peacefulness underneath the panic.

That peacefulness is subtle, but it is there. It can grow the more we learn to trust ourselves and our own heart.

The reality is, we’re not going to move from fear to intuition instantly, and that is entirely beside the point. The point is to be gentle, to find self-compassion when we’re conflicted by fragility and delicate emotions. And sometimes we might seesaw between fear and intuition, between doubt and hope, and be with the space between to let our nervous system settle before we are able to tell the difference. Sometimes, it is only through experience, that we learn this difference.

The benefit of exploring this is that we find a safe space, like trauma-informed counselling, or with someone your gut tells you feels safe, to unpack all of these thoughts and understand ourselves, so we can shape ourselves into who we like and make choices that nourish our lives and nurture those around us. To find kindness that can ripple through ourselves and into the world around us.

Intuition doesn’t demand or rush; it simply asks for gentleness and presence.
