Why It’s So Hard to Make Decisions When You Feel Overwhelmed
Understanding Your Nervous System | Counselling in Noosa Heads
Have you ever felt completely stuck trying to make a decision — even one you know you want to make?
You might overthink, shut down, avoid it entirely, or feel a wave of anxiety that stops you in your tracks.
This isn’t because you’re indecisive.
It’s because your nervous system is overwhelmed.
As a counsellor working with clients in Noosa Heads, one of the most important things I help people understand is this:
We can’t think clearly when our body doesn’t feel safe.The Real Reason Decision-Making Feels So Hard
When you’re calm and grounded, your brain can:
* Think clearly
* Weigh options
* Trust your intuition
But when your nervous system detects threat (real or perceived), your body shifts into survival mode.
In these states:
* Your thinking becomes limited
* Your body prioritises safety over logic
* Even small decisions can feel overwhelming
So instead of asking “What do I want?”
Your system is asking “Am I safe?”
The 3 Core Nervous System States
Your experience can be understood through Polyvagal Theory, which explains how your body responds to stress and safety.
🟢 Ventral (Safe & Connected)
* Calm, present, grounded
* Able to connect, think, and decide
* This is where clarity lives
🔴 Sympathetic (Fight or Flight)
* Anxious, restless, overwhelmed
* Urgent thinking, overanalysing
* Decisions feel pressured or stressful
🔵 Dorsal (Shutdown)
* Numb, foggy, low energy
* Disconnected or stuck
* Decisions feel impossible
There are also blended states, like:
*Freeze** (anxious but stuck)
*Play** (safe and energised)
*Stillness** (safe and deeply calm)
What Happens in the Body When You Feel Stuck
Have you ever:
* Driven somewhere you wanted to go… but couldn’t get out of the car?
* Avoided something important because it felt “too much”?
* Felt frozen when trying something new?
This is your nervous system trying to protect you.
It may be responding not just to the present moment, but to past experiences where it learned:
* “This isn’t safe”
* “I need to shut down”
* “I need to escape”
Even if, logically, you are safe now.
Why Talking Alone Isn’t Enough
Many people assume that if they just think it through or talk about it, they’ll feel better.
And while talking can help you:
* Understand your patterns
* Gain clarity
Real change happens through felt experience in the body.
> You don’t heal by telling your system you’re safe —
> you heal by showing it.
What Is “Body Mapping” the Nervous System?
Body mapping is the practice of learning:
👉 How each nervous system state feels in your body
For example:
* Tight chest or shallow breathing → anxiety (fight/flight)
* Heavy limbs or numbness → shutdown
* Restlessness or urgency → stress activation
* Warmth, openness → safety and connection
When you can recognise these signals, something powerful happens:
You stop thinking, “Something is wrong with me”
And start recognising, “This is a state I’m in”
A Gentle Way to Regulate in the Moment
When you feel overwhelmed or stuck, try this:
1. Name the state
“This feels like anxiety” or “This feels like freeze”
2. Notice the body
Where do you feel it?
3. Orient to safety
Look around and remind yourself:
“I am safe right now”
4. Make a small shift
* Slow your movements
* Step outside
* Feel water (like swimming or surfing)
* In therapy, or in spare time create a nervous system resource list of activities that help you out of states such as freeze, fight/flight etc.
* Take a gentle breath
5. Delay the decision
Wait until your body feels more regulated if you can. Focus on regulation, showing your body that you are safe. Then return to the decision.
Why Small Changes Matter
You don’t need to go from overwhelmed to calm instantly. None of us can do that. Change takes time. New pathways take time.
Even 10% more regulation is meaningful.
Healing your nervous system is:
* Slow
* Subtle
* Built through repetition
It’s not about forcing yourself —
It’s about gently showing your body a new experience of safety.
Returning to Safety After Stretching Yourself
If you’re trying new things (a new job, new environment, or big life changes), your nervous system will activate.
That’s normal.
What matters is that you:
* Stretch yourself
* Then return to comfort and safety
This balance is what builds resilience — without burnout.
You’re Not Bad at Decision-Making
If you struggle to make decisions, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.
It means your body may be:
* Protecting you
* Holding onto past experiences
* Trying to keep you safe
With awareness, support, and practice, you can learn to:
* Understand your nervous system
* Regulate your body
* Make decisions from a place of safety and clarity
